Verideia Classical Christian Academy was started 35 years ago to support Evangelical Baptist families who desired to provide a Christian education for their children. When insufficient interest in the school from this specific community manifested itself, the school broadened school participation to include Evangelicals from other denominations. Currently our school is comprised of many different evangelical families and members but some may be unclear with what the term evangelical means.
Evangelical is a term that describes a person who submits to the Bible as his only authourity, an individual who doesn’t add or take away from this singular revelatory source of truth. An evangelical is one who holds human philosophy and reason with distrust as they are often diametrically opposed to the preaching of the gospel. “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” I Cor. 2:14
An evangelical puts a tremendous emphasis on the rebirth and sees everything in terms of regeneration by the grace of God. This new beginning, being born from above, with a new nature, being made a new creature in the power of Christ’s life is essential.
The last aspect I will touch on regarding an evangelical probably goes without saying but an evangelical is someone who is always concerned about evangelism. Because an evangelical is forever grateful to God for saving him, he is anxious for others to have the same. He doesn’t want his fellow man going to Hell and thus he is burdened for them to be brought to the knowledge of the truth as it is in Christ Jesus.
Much more could be said about this adjective however enough has been said to spur us all to be more
evangelical in all that we do, so in keeping with our identity flee to Christ if you haven’t then talk to your
children and assess whether this adjective aptly describes your family. For a deeper dive, check out What is an Evangelical by D.M. Lloyd Jones.
