In classical Christian education circles phrases like ‘fostering right affections’ and the ‘proper ordering of loves’ is commonplace, but I would argue even though the world may not use this specific language the process of shaping affections is happening everywhere and all the time.
Like a fish that gets oxygen from the water it swims in the world presents an environment acclimatizing the masses to what the world loves. ‘Social justice’ shapes affections. The ‘climate crises’ defines certain heroes and villains. Even how different political contests are depicted in mainstream school curricula and media, inevitably establishes approval and disapproval binaries. So, what is the takeaway from all this?
Fortunately, the war for our affections will be won by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Spirit who makes us alive in Jesus Christ will remove the scales which blind us to the glories of God giving us new hearts of flesh to love the giver of those new hearts. As students learn this year how to walk in the Spirit and thus produce the fruits of the Spirit, they will become more holy as their whole person knows and loves God rightly.
Pray that God would use Verideia in partnership with the Christian home and Church to provide a superior alternative environment in which to live, breathe and have our affections rightly ordered.
