As a classical Christian school, I thought we had cornered the market on instilling virtue and wisdom, but lately I think we are being outdone by the government. Who would have thought? Each week our students say “Our growth in virtue and wisdom is of God’s grace and through the outworking of the Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit,” as part of their VCCA Declaration.
In juxtaposition to the outworking of the Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit is the government’s own declaration of virtue through relentless messaging which stresses loving our neighbour, by forgoing one’s personal freedom and liberty for what we are told is for other’s health, equity, land, diversity, reparations, climate control, and even feelings. In our post-modern culture are we still allowed to say what is true for you may not be true for me in the arena of virtue? Probably not.
Can the virtue of eliminating carbon emissions be true for you but not for me? Can the virtue of intersectionality be true for you but not for me? Can the virtue of abortion on demand be true for you but not for me? Can fluid gender identity be true for you but not for me? Can vaccine mandates be true for you but for me? This week in chapel we learned from the parable of the Good Samaritan, who is our neighbour and more importantly are we a good neigbour to others? Wisdom today may be a lot more about discerning which virtues are from God and which are from Satan.
