In preparation for a marketing course Mrs. Long and I are planning to take over March Break, we are reading Building a Story Brand 2.0 by Donald Miller.

Part of the marketing philosophy this author proposes is to tell a story where the customer is the hero. My initial struggle with this concept is that from a Christian perspective, Jesus is the hero. It is Jesus who made and sustains us. It is Jesus rescuing rebels. It is Jesus purchasing slaves of sin. It is law breakers being imputed with Jesus’ righteousness. It is enemies of God being made co- heirs with Christ our brother and King. It is Jesus returning to earth to make all things right.

Then the more I thought about this philosophy and that as image bearers of God and as new creatures growing in Christlikeness, we ought to be in the rescuing business. Did God make us with the DNA of heroism? Is it in our blood to provide for, rescue, support, and be the helpers others need? Did God make us to be heroes? Is God using us to expand His kingdom and make His glory known to the ends of the earth, starting with our young sons and daughters learning about the preeminence of Christ over all things? Because we know there is a cosmic battle raging for the hearts and minds of the next generation, maybe fighting with God-given courage in the battle array for the affections of VCCA students is the heroism this sin cursed world desperately needs and King Jesus expects. May we all be the heroes our families need not for the fame, but for the cause of Christ and His fame.
